Dr. Rex Johnson

Pastor of Care Ministries

Rex joined the 1BL staff part time in February 2009, accepting the responsibility for Care Ministries.  This includes care ministries to the congregation, as well as mobilizing care to the communities around us to impact the world for the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.  He is overseeing and further developing longtime 1BL ministries such as SOS, Helping Hands, Respect Life, Celebrate Recovery, and an HIV/AIDS ministry.  He's also beginning to develop new Care ministries such as Interview & Launch, Preparing for the Journey, a comprehensive Counseling ministry, Safe Families for Children, GriefShare ministries, Transforming Communities, ReUnite and others in the future.  Rex’s basic ministry passion is being a part of God’s redemptive work in individuals, families, groups and organizations.

Rex is a professor at Talbot School of Theology, a school of Biola University, where he has ministered through teaching and research for 34 years.  He teaches in the Department of Christian Ministry and Leadership, leads the Pastoral Care & Counseling Emphasis, and has published several books and articles in the areas of Christian Education and Pastoral Care.  He also teaches in the Master’s in Organizational Leadership program.  Prior to Biola, he served in churches as a Minister to College & Career people, Minister to Youth, Minister of Christian Education and Minister of People Development.  For the past 18 years Rex has also ministered extensively overseas, starting in the former Soviet Union just after the fall of Communism, with a curriculum he helped develop titled Foundations of Ethics and Morality which is still being used in public schools as a replacement for classes in communism.  It's now also being introduced to teachers in Guatemala and other nations.  He continues to work on other curricula that have also been developed by the International School Project, writing a curriculum for Parent Education for Ukraine during the first 2 weeks in June.  More will come in the future.  Rex has also ministered on other assignments in the Philippines, China, Greece, and Bulgaria.  In April he was in Korea speaking in two Pastors' conferences, and in July he will go with Paul Armstrong and others to Bulgaria again to minister to Gypsy pastors and wives.

Rex and his wife, Eve, minister together to marriages in crisis, as well as leading workshops on marriage in churches nationally and internationally.  They have been married 42 years, have four grown children, including Pastor Matt Johnson, and seven grandchildren.  He enjoys reading and research, developing presentations and workshops, teaching and preaching, working on his home – new roof and flooring, etc., traveling with Eve, and snow skiing.  Rex and Eve attended 1BL over 20 years ago for about 13 years while their children were in the children’s program, Junior High and High School.  They are glad to be back!
